Improving Shoreline Habitat & Buffer Functions

Photo depicts shoreline buffersThis training will provide information about the Critical Area Buffer Regulations and Living Shorelines.  Participants will explore how to effectively implement shoreline planting requirements associated with new construction and living shoreline projects.

Speakers will cover:

  • Basic provisions of the regulations including important terms
  • Process for delineating and expanding the buffer
  • Buffer Planting; Buffer Maintenance; and Enforcement
  • Invasive species identification and control
  • Plant selection, vegetation type credits, and plant sizes and stocking
  • Natural regeneration and alternative establishment methods
  • Simplified, Minor, and Major Buffer Management Plans and ways to streamline the review process
  • Living Shoreline design and customizing practices for the site

Training attendees will be introduced to The Green Book for the Buffer and each participant will receive a copy of the publication. Commission staff will explain how planners can use the guide to assist property owners with preparing and implementing Buffer Management Plans for small projects.

This training includes a field component, and participants will tour several sites to analyze existing natural buffers; discuss buffer plantings; management strategies and techniques; and learn invasive species identification and control. There will also be a discussion of the use of living shorelines for erosion control and how living shorelines can be integrated with buffer plantings. We will be outside, DRESS for the WEATHER!
